Gakenke station, which processed this coffee, was built in 1991 and has 2,685 registered farmer members spread across the Kayanza province. The farm members are organized in groups of 30, each lead by a producer that helps facilitate communication and organization with the washing station. Each farmer typically cares for an average of 250 trees. With each tree yielding an average of 1.5 kilos of cherry, the average producer sells about 200 to 300 kilos of the harvested cherry annually. The Gakenke washing station also participates in a number of farmer support projects including a livestock rearing project and a range of projects centered on strengthening cooperatives and improving yields.
